Tata launched its most popular SUV, the Harrier, with a petrol engine this year. A detailed review of the new petrol Harrier is available on our YouTube channel. While we have come across several videos of the Harrier petrol online, only a few talk about the absolute base variant. Brands often market these vehicles using the premium features offered in the top-end variants. Here, we have a video that shows what the base Smart variant of the Harrier petrol, priced at Rs 12.9 lakh, offers.
The video has been shared by Rajan 0025 on his YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger gives us a quick walkaround of the Harrier petrol’s base variant. The SUV seen here is finished in white. The vlogger starts with the front of the SUV. It gets dual-function LED DRLs, split headlamps, and a gloss-black grille. The bumper design also looks similar to higher variants, but if you look closely, you will notice that it doesn’t come with faux skid plates, foil accents, or a front camera.
Moving to the side profile, you will notice that the Harrier base variant gets alloy wheels. These are 5-spoke units finished in silver and are 17-inch wheels, which are smaller than those offered in higher trims. The Harrier also misses out on roof rails, a shark-fin antenna, and chrome or brushed aluminium inserts along the window line.
At the rear, the Harrier petrol gets Harrier branding, halogen tail lamps, and a gloss-black strip that connects the tail lamps. The bumper is finished in black and misses out on a faux skid plate. We also see parking sensors, but the SUV does not offer any parking cameras.
On the inside, the driver’s cabin of the Harrier petrol base variant is quite basic. It gets fabric upholstery and offers tilt and telescopic steering, a flat-bottom steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, power windows, touch-sensitive buttons for AC and other controls, a semi-digital instrument cluster, and a manual handbrake instead of an electric parking brake.

However, it misses out on several features like remote central locking, electrically adjustable ORVMs, an infotainment system, speakers, cameras, Level 2 ADAS, and a wireless phone charger. The USB ports and 12V sockets are placed under the driver’s armrest. The SUV also does not offer steering-mounted controls for the music system. There are provisions for speakers on the doors, but no speakers are provided.
The Tata Harrier petrol is powered by a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine, which Tata calls Hyperion. This engine debuted in the Sierra, but in the Harrier and Safari, it is tuned differently. It generates 170 PS and 280 Nm of peak torque. The SUV is available with both manual and automatic transmission options, but in the base Smart variant, Tata offers only a manual transmission.
If you are in the market for a turbo-petrol SUV and the lack of features does not bother you, the base variant of the Tata Harrier could be considered, as it allows you to customise the cabin with features of your choice later on.
