Renault launched the all-new Duster in the Indian market a couple of weeks ago, and deliveries for the same will begin soon. One thing that many people noticed about the new Duster was its engine. Many believed it was using a turbo-petrol engine made by Mercedes-Benz. However, that is not entirely true. The same engine will also make its way into other mass-market models, and here is a list of such SUVs.

The engine in question is the 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit that generates 163 PS and 280 Nm of peak torque. In the Duster, this engine is called the TCe 160, where TCe stands for Turbo Control Efficiency and 160 represents the power output. The actual internal name of the engine is HR13 or HR13DDT.
This engine was introduced in 2018 and was jointly developed by Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Mercedes-Benz as part of their alliance. Mercedes-Benz uses a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine in some of its models, where it is known as the M282 engine. In fact, the M282 engine was originally developed by Renault and was initially offered in a few models in its lineup. However, it gained widespread attention when the same engine made its way into Mercedes-Benz models in 2018. Mercedes-Benz offers this engine in models like the A-Class, B-Class, CLA, GLA, and GLB. This is likely the reason behind the confusion that Renault is using an engine from Mercedes-Benz.
Now that the Renault Duster has been launched, Nissan is expected to introduce its own version of the Duster. The company is currently working on this SUV, which will be based on the same platform as the Duster and will come with similar features and engine options.

Where the Nissan Tekton will differ is in its exterior design. It is expected to feature a Nissan Patrol-inspired design, along with a revised interior layout and colour theme. The SUV will use the same 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 163 PS and 280 Nm of torque, and will be offered with both manual and 6-speed DCT gearbox options.

After the Duster, Renault is also working on another SUV, this time a 7-seater. Although it is based on the same platform as the Duster, it will be slightly longer, wider, and offer a longer wheelbase. The Boreal has already been unveiled in several international markets, and it remains to be seen whether the Indian version will look the same.
The Boreal is based on the Bigster concept and will be powered by the same 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine as the Duster. A 1.8-litre hybrid engine is also expected to be offered.

If Renault launches a 7-seater SUV based on the Duster, it is natural for Nissan to follow a similar strategy. The company has a 7-seater SUV planned for India, which will likely be based on the Tekton. It is expected to carry forward the Patrol-inspired design language to maintain a strong visual identity. It will also be offered with 1.3 litre turbo petrol engine with manual and 6-speed DCT gearbox options.
