Electric vehicles continue to sell well in India. In February this year, the EV space saw an interesting development- the recently-launched Mahindra XEV 9S ranked number one in sales, beating the Tata Nexon.EV and MG Windsor- two mass-market models that have been around for long and continue to be in high demand. Let’s take a closer look.

EV sales data from February, published by Autopunditz, reveals that 3,539 units of the Mahindra XEV 9S were sold during the month. Windsor numbers during the same period stood at 2,599 units. Tata Motors posted sales of 2,410 units of the Nexon.EV.
The XEV 9S, Mahindra’s first three-row electric SUV, launched in India in November 2025. Deliveries started commencing in late January this year. 612 units of this electric SUV were sold then. In February, we saw this jump to 3539 units- an increase of 2927 units! The aggressive market positioning of the XEV 9S seems to have contributed well to shaping its acceptance here. Its starting ex-showroom price of Rs 19.95 lakh packs immense value into the XEV 9S.
Another possible reason behind the number-boom is the bookings backlog. The XEV 9S already has a lot of pending bookings and Mahindra is working towards clearing the backlog. This may have also contributed to the dispatch count going up.
And finally, the XEV 9S’ smart packaging and practical design seem to resonate well with buyer preferences, adding to its acceptance here.

The Nexon EV and Windsor are both extremely popular models, mainly due to their pricing and value proposition. Let’s do a quick comparison with January numbers. In January, 2567 Windsors were sold, while Tata Motors registered sales of 3098 units of the Nexon.EV.
In February, the Windsor stayed consistent, selling 2599 units. The Nexon.EV, on the other hand, saw a decline in sales and dropped to 2410 units, translating to 22% de-growth.

As mentioned above, the Mahindra XEV 9S, MG Windsor and Tata Nexon EV take the first, second and third spots. At the fourth place is the Mahindra XEV 9e, posting sales of 1889 units during the month. When the XEV 9S was launched, many speculated that it could potentially cannibalise the XEV 9e’s sales to some extent. So far, the coupe SUV has been safe. Time remains before we find out if it is able to hold its place in the sales ladder.
Taking the fifth place is the Tata Harrier.EV that was launched in June last year. It sold 1738 units in February.
1250 units of the Curvv.EV were retailed during the month, and the coupe ranked sixth in the ladder.

At the seventh position is the Tata Tiago.EV, with 1226 units sold during the month. It is still one of the most affordable electric cars that you can buy in India with a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 7.99 lakh. Despite its age, the Tiago.EV continues to be in good demand.
The Mahindra BE6 ranked eighth in the list, posting sales of 1104 units in the month.
At the ninth spot is the Tata Punch.EV , which sold 1061 units. We are likely to see these numbers shoot up in the coming months. Tata Motors launched a comprehensive facelift on the Punch.EV in the second half of February. The update brought several changes to the model including new battery packs (30kWh and 40kWh). Deliveries of the facelift are currently underway.

At the 10th spot is the Maruti eVitara which recorded sales of 870 units in February. This electric SUV was also launched in mid-February and deliveries are currently underway. The numbers shared here show good initial response towards the model despite the carmaker being late to the EV party.
