Mahindra & Mahindra, like most car manufacturers, has entered the electric vehicle segment and currently has three born-electric models in its lineup. These are all based on concepts that Mahindra showcased a couple of years ago. While Mahindra is working on new EVs for our market, let’s take a look at how the recently launched EVs from the brand are performing in the market.Sales numbers for the month of February have been released, and it looks like the Mahindra XEV 9S was the best-selling EV for Mahindra last month.

The sales numbers for Mahindra and other brands have already been published online. It appears that the XEV 9S is a popular choice among buyers. Mahindra sold more units of the XEV 9S than the Mahindra XEV 9E.
As per reports, Mahindra sold 3,539 units of the XEV 9S electric SUV in the country, while they sold only 1,889 units of the 9E last month.
It looks like the XEV 9S is not only the best-selling EV for Mahindra but also one of the best-selling EVs in the country last month. If we compare these numbers with some of the other popular EVs in the market, things become clearer.

The MG Windsor EV, which has been one of the best sellers in the market for some time, recorded 2,599 units on the sales chart. Similarly, Tata Motors managed to sell a total of 3,096 units of its SUVs in the EV category last month, which is still lower than the XEV 9S.
The only EV that we assume is ahead of the XEV 9S at the moment is the Tata Nexon EV. Tata sold a total of 19,430 units of the Tata Nexon last month. However, Tata hasn’t released the exact number of EVs within this total. So there is a possibility that the XEV 9S from Mahindra might have actually been the best-selling EV in the country last month.

So what are the reasons for such high sales numbers for the Mahindra XEV 9S? Let’s find out.
The Mahindra XEV 9S was officially launched in the market last year, but deliveries only started in January this year. By then, Mahindra had already received a large number of bookings.
There is currently a waiting period for the XEV 9S, and Mahindra is busy dispatching cars to customers who had already placed their bookings.

Because of this backlog of bookings, Mahindra is able to deliver a large number of units to customers right now. In the coming months, once the waiting period reduces and the initial bookings are fulfilled, we will get a clearer picture of the steady monthly sales numbers.
Another reason why we feel the XEV 9S appeals to more buyers than the Mahindra XEV 9E and the Mahindra BE 6 is its design.

Unlike the other two models, the XEV 9S has a more conventional design that is not too polarising. Its styling is somewhat similar to the Mahindra XUV700, and that is something many buyers seem to like. Not everyone like the coupe design on the 9E and BE6
The XEV 9S is currently the only electric SUV in its segment offering a seven-seat or three-row configuration. This adds to the practicality of the vehicle.

If the last row is not in use, the seats can be folded to create more boot space. If all three rows are in use, there is still around 150 litres of storage space in the frunk along with some room for soft luggage in the rear.
Price is another factor that is drawing buyers towards the XEV 9S. The price for the XEV 9S starts at Rs 19.95 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 29.45 lakh (ex-showroom).

If you compare this with the Mahindra XEV 9E, the XEV 9S is actually more affordable. The 9E starts at Rs 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 31.25 lakh (ex-showroom). As a result, customers feel they are getting more value for money with the XEV 9S.
The Mahindra XEV 9S is also the first EV in Mahindra’s lineup to come with three battery options. The SUV is available with 59 kWh, 70 kWh, and 79 kWh battery packs, offering more flexibility to customers.

The 70 kWh battery option is also expected to be introduced soon in the Mahindra XEV 9E and the Mahindra BE 6.
