Mahindra currently dominates India’s body-on-frame SUV segment, with models like the Thar, Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic consistently posting strong sales. While competitors are focusing on monocoque SUVs, this Indian carmaker has doubled down on rugged ladder-frame vehicles.
Now the company is preparing a major refresh for three of its most important SUVs - the Thar, Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic - to keep them competitive as new rivals arrive.

The carmaker is known to be working on a facelifted version of the three-door Mahindra Thar. A fresh test mule sighting has given out clues of changes that are to be expected on the production model.
The upcoming 3-door Thar facelift will borrow several cues from the five-door ROXX, including the ‘six-pack’ grille. The circular LED headlights will likely feature integrated LED DRLs. The front bumper design is also expected to evolve on the new model.
The SUV will also get a new set of alloy wheels, likely borrowed from the lower variants of the ROXX. The rear design is unlikely to have major changes. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel will be retained. The LED tail lamp cluster, however, is likely to be tweaked. The rear bumper will also be redesigned.
Inside, the dashboard design and layout will remain largely unchanged. It will continue to offer features like a 10.25-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, rear AC vents, sliding centre armrest, a fuel door release button and more. The facelift will likely add features like a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and an automatic climate control.
It will use the outgoing model’s powertrain lineup- 2.2L turbocharged diesel, 2.0L turbocharged petrol and 1.5L diesel ( on lower variants). Spy sightings have become more frequent lately, indicating the new Thar could go on sale sometime soon.
The Thar family now has two member- the three-door Thar and the five-door Thar ROXX. Together, these models sold over 63,800 units during the period from August 2025 to January 2026. The facelift will help keep the three-door competitive and contribute to the overall volumes further.

Another important ladder-frame SUV from Mahindra slated to receive an update soon is the Scorpio-N. The model continues to be one of the company’s strongest sellers.
While the overall design of the Scorpio-N will remain familiar, the facelift is expected to bring in subtle styling revisions and additional features. From what we have seen in spy images, the new model will feature updated lighting signature, tweaked front and rear bumpers, new wheels and restyled fog lamps.
Another major change will be the wheels. The outgoing SUV rides on 18-inch wheels, which are likely to be replaced with ROXX-sourced 19-inch wheels on the facelift.
The cabin will also see big improvements. The overall design and layout are expected to remain the same as those of the outgoing model. More features are likely to be added to the facelifted model. One of the biggest highlights will be the addition of a panoramic sunroof. The outgoing Scorpio-N has a single-pane electric sunroof.

The facelift will also get a ROXX-like bigger infotainment unit, a fully-digital instrument cluster, and more. It will also offer ADAS features in more variants. These are now limited to just the higher trims.
The Scorpio-N facelift will continue to use the same ladder-frame architecture along with the existing 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines. 4x4 hardware is expected to be kept exclusive to the diesel variants. This facelift aims at closing the technology gap that the Scorpio-N’s rivals have created in recent years.
Talking of rivals, the Scorpio-N competes with the likes of Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, and even the Hyundai Alcazar. Interestingly, none of these are ladder-frame products. Finding an apt ladder-frame rival to this SUV seems difficult at the time of writing. That said, the aforementioned SUVs come packed with features and have comfortable cabins. They have, over time, been updated with new features and technologies.
This has put the Scorpio-N at a slight disadvantage, which the facelift will try to address. Sunroof and screens are easy examples. The Scorpio-N comes with a single-pane electric sunroof while its rivals boast large panoramic units. The 8-inch touchscreen on the Scorpio-N may seem minuscule in comparison to the units offered on rivals like the Hector.

Mahindra is also expected to update the Mahindra Scorpio Classic sometime soon. This SUV continues to have a strong foothold in semi-urban and rural markets, due to its rugged, no-nonsense nature. It offers a strong value proposition and the same is expected to be kept safe on the new model.
The facelifted Scorpio Classic will get minor design tweaks over the previous model. It will also see the addition of more features and new, more premium trims. The cabin will likely be made more comfortable and practical. Mahindra may refresh the grille design and lighting. The SUV will also get a new set of wheels.
The Scorpio Classic will continue to be powered by the familiar 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. It is only available with a manual transmission.
The Scorpio family is also a major volume contributor. The duo sold over 93,100 units during the period from August 2025 to January 2026.
