The electric car market of India is booming as of late, and Tata Motors is still the largest EV automaker in India. However, there is another Indian automaker which has been growing exponentially. What's more astonishing about this brand is that it sells only electric SUVs and has managed to grow by 407 percent on a year-on-year basis. Now, to stop you from wondering, the automaker that we are talking about is Mahindra Automotive.

First off, let's talk about the EV sales of Mahindra Automotive in FY2025. The company only sold 8,426 units, as at the time it only had the Mahindra XUV400 EV in its lineup. However, over the last year, the company has increased its EV portfolio and now offers a number of new models, including XEV 9E, BE 6, XEV 9S, and the new XUV 3XO EV.

Due to this increase in the number of EVs in the lineup, and all of them offering a great value-for-money package, Mahindra Automotive’s growth over FY2026 has impressed everyone. The company, in FY2026, sold 42,721 units of EVs, which, when compared to FY2025, has jumped 5 times. On a year-on-year basis, Mahindra EV sales have grown by 407 percent, making it India's fastest-growing EV maker.

In terms of the individual sales figures, from the data of March 2026, it has been noted that the XEV 9S 7-seater electric SUV is the most popular SUV in the Mahindra EV lineup at the moment. Last month, the company sold a total of 3,254 units of this SUV. Meanwhile, the second most popular model has been the XEV 9E, of which 1,759 units were sold.

Next up, the BE 6 saw sales jump, and 1,495 units were sold in March. Lastly, 117 units of the XUV400 were sold as well. The Mahindra XUV400 has now been replaced by the XUV 3XO EV. Presently, the individual sales figures for the XUV 3XO EV have not been revealed.
Mahindra Automotive has managed to see such explosive growth due to a number of reasons. Of these, the first is that the company, in the last fiscal year, has launched a number of excellent EVs in the market. The Mahindra XEV 9S is the major example. It is the only seven-seater EV SUV in the affordable segment, making it very popular in a short span of time.

Also, the Mahindra EVs which are currently on sale, namely the BE 6, XEV 9S, and XEV 9E, are based on the new-age INGLO electric architecture. All of these EVs offer 59 kWh and 79 kWh battery pack options, which are some of the biggest in the segments and offer a good real-world range of around 400–500 km. Due to these, many people are opting for them. Them being feature-packed is another reason why many people are buying them.

Other automakers which have seen extremely high growth percentages in terms of their EV sales include Kia, which has seen a staggering growth of 794 percent. In FY2025, it sold 418 units; meanwhile, in FY2026, it sold 3,738 units. The French automaker Citroen also witnessed massive growth of 249 percent, as it sold 2,013 units in FY2026 compared to 576 units in FY2025.

Lastly, Hyundai also saw an impressive growth of 137 percent, with its 5,885 units sales in FY2026 compared to 2,477 units in FY2025. MG Motor India, which is currently the second-largest automaker selling EVs, saw a sales jump of 74 percent, with its 53,089 units sales compared to 30,569 units between FY2026 and FY2025.

Tata Motors is still the most dominant EV player in India. In FY2026, Tata Motors' electric division sold 78,811 units, while in FY2025, it sold 57,994 units. Its growth rate has been modest at 36 percent. Tata Motors does not reveal the individual sales figures for its EVs. However, currently, the most popular EV sold by the brand is Nexon.ev. It also recently launched the Punch.ev Facelift, and it will be soon launching the Sierra.ev as well.
