Kia is accelerating its product offensive in the premium utility vehicle space, with the Sorento Hybrid recently spotted undergoing local testing near Delhi. The heavy camouflage on the test mule suggests the manufacturer is closely evaluating the vehicle for our road and climate conditions ahead of a market launch, which is expected toward the end of 2026.
This three row SUV is positioned to disrupt a segment that has long been dominated by heavy, ladder frame diesel vehicles like the Toyota Fortuner and the MG Gloster.

By bringing in a sophisticated hybrid powertrain, the brand intends to offer buyers an alternative that promises better fuel efficiency and lower emissions without asking them to compromise on physical footprint or road presence.
The most significant talking point of the upcoming Sorento is its powertrain. While the segment default has always been large displacement diesel engines, the Sorento is expected to arrive with a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The internal combustion engine alone delivers a healthy 177 bhp, and the electric motor supplements this with an additional 64 bhp.

This strong hybrid configuration will allow the heavy SUV to crawl in stop and go city traffic purely on electric power, significantly boosting its urban fuel efficiency. The powertrain will be mated to a dedicated automatic transmission. Buyers can expect the company to offer both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants to cater to highway cruisers as well as those requiring mild off-road capabilities.
Measuring roughly 4.8 metres in length, the Sorento matches its primary rivals in terms of sheer real estate. The exterior design follows the latest global styling cues seen on newer models like the flagship EV9. It features an upright, squared off stance, the signature tiger nose front grille, and vertically stacked LED headlamps that give it a highly aggressive front fascia.

The side profile is marked by sharp creases and large alloy wheels, while the rear gets vertical LED taillamps that visually widen the vehicle. Unlike the rugged, utilitarian design of a traditional ladder frame SUV, the Sorento utilises a monocoque chassis, which generally translates to better high-speed stability, less body roll, and a more car like driving experience.
Inside the cabin, the Sorento is expected to mirror the premium positioning of the recently launched Carnival luxury MPV. The dashboard will be dominated by a large dual screen setup seamlessly integrating the infotainment system and the digital driver display. Premium materials, soft touch plastics, and high-quality leatherette upholstery will elevate the interior experience above its more rugged competitors.

The vehicle will be offered in both six-and-seven-seater configurations, with the six-seater likely featuring captain seats in the middle row. Essential premium features like ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, multi zone climate control, and a premium audio system will be standard. Furthermore, a complete Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems suite will be included to ensure active safety on highways.
Pricing will be the ultimate deciding factor for the Sorento. Current estimates indicate that the two wheel drive base variants will start around Rs 28.00 lakh, while the fully loaded four-wheel drive hybrid model could stretch up to Rs 35.00 lakh (ex-showroom).
If Kia manages to launch the vehicle within this price bracket through local assembly, it will significantly undercut the top end variants of the Toyota Fortuner, making the Sorento an incredibly attractive proposition for buyers seeking a tech forward, environmentally conscious luxury SUV.
