A lot has been happening at Honda lately. On March 12th, the carmaker announced that three of its proposed all-electric models- the 0 Series SUV, 0 Series Saloon and the Acura RSX, will not be put into production. The 0 SUV was supposed to be Honda’s first EV for the Indian market, slated to arrive later this year. Pulling the plug on it naturally raised questions. Uncertainty surrounded the smaller 0 Alpha SUV, which was originally slated to be the second all-electric Honda launch here. Honda Cars India has now cleared the air by confirming to us that the Zero Alpha SUV project is well on track and will be out in 2027.

The official X (previously Twitter) handle of Honda Cars India recently shared a teaser confirming the launch timeline of the 0 Alpha SUV. Text on the picture reads ‘The future is closer than you think. Honda 0 Alpha coming to India in 2027.’ Even though the post did not mention the exact launch timeline, the description read ‘A new chapter of Honda mobility is on its way. Designed around the next era of electric driving.’, pointing to an imminent market entry. This post was later taken down.
Honda Cars India has now officially confirmed the launch timeline of the 0 Alpha SUV, the manufacturer’s first EV for India. Talking about the global EV strategy restructuring, the company clarified that India remains an important market where it will ‘enhance model lineup and cost competitiveness.’ It also confirmed that the first Honda BEV for India will be the production form of the Honda 0 α prototype.

It then said that the project is on track and will arrive in the second half of the financial year 2026-27. In other words, October 2026 to March 2027. Connect this with what was mentioned in the teaser image- launching in 2027- and we get a more accurate picture. The electric SUV could likely launch sometime in the first three months of 2027. The latest statement has reiterated Honda’s focus on delivering value and ensuring cost competitiveness with this EV.

The 0 Alpha’s production form will be a mid-size electric SUV that will compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE6 and others, when launched. It will be manufactured in India. The same will ensure cost competitiveness.
The 0 Alpha borrows many of its design cues from the bigger 0 SUV that now stands cancelled. It isn’t as radical as the 0 Series, but still looks very futuristic. The features flush-type door handles, thick cladding, and an extremely radical rear end with U-shaped LED taillights and a bumper with a double-bubble diffuser. It remains to be seen how many of these would make it to the production model.

Honda hasn’t revealed the exact powertrain details of the 0 Alpha electric SUV. It is likely to get two battery packs- 65 kWh and 75 kWh. Both versions will come with front-mounted electric motors.

Honda first showcased the 0 Series SUV and Saloon at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, last year. The SUV and Saloon gathered a lot of attention. On March 12th, Honda announced that these, along with the Acura RSX, have been canceled.
Honda has decided to cancel the development and market launch of these. The company had previously showcased these at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2025. Several factors contributed to shaping this decision. The recent changes in the global business environment, Honda’s performance in the global market, global decline in demand for EVs, pressure from Chinese EV majors, have collectively made the carmaker cancel the three.
