The demand for SUVs in the Indian market is growing. Many brands, due to strict emission norms, have started shifting from diesel to petrol engines. When it comes to any car, the first question that everyone asks is about fuel efficiency. That is the reason why Maruti Suzuki cars are often popular among buyers. Tata and Mahindra are known for their build quality and not efficiency. However, we have now come across a video where a Tata Harrier Petrol SUV owner has revealed the stunning fuel efficiency that he is getting with the SUV.
The video has been shared by Adi Zone on its YouTube channel. Tata Harrier Petrol owner Mr. Vinay Kesari shared his real-world experiences after driving his vehicle for over 3,500 kilometres. He is an IT professional. This is not his first car, and before this, he owned a Tata Tiago. He used the hatchback for over 10 years before upgrading to the Harrier. Vinay owns the Tata Harrier Petrol Automatic Adventure X+ Dark Edition variant.
He mentions that the biggest surprise or the talking point of the entire ownership experience is fuel efficiency. The Harrier rivals SUVs like the MG Hector and the XUV 7XO. Both these SUVs are powerful but are not very efficient. They are said to return around 7–8 km/l in city driving conditions with heavy traffic.

He has been driving the SUV in both city and highway conditions, and he has actually been surprised by the overall mileage. In city driving conditions, he has been getting around 11 to 12 kmpl. He mentions that this is during bumper-to-bumper traffic in Delhi, Noida, and Gurgaon. He also drove the car on open highways as part of his daily commute, and on such stretches, the Harrier Petrol was offering him a decent efficiency of 13 to 14 kmpl. It should be noted that this is an automatic SUV.
The Tata Harrier is a heavy SUV, and for a vehicle of this size and weight, the efficiency that it is offering is pretty good. Vinay mentions that he didn’t go with the turbo-diesel version of the Harrier for one reason. Diesel engines are better in terms of efficiency and low-end torque. However, with the 10-year rule in the Delhi-NCR region, he was not ready to take a chance. For him, a petrol car guarantees longevity and peace of mind. Another reason was the resale value. Because of the regulations on diesel engines, the resale value is getting affected, and he feels a petrol vehicle will retain a much better resale value 4 to 5 years down the line.
As mentioned above, he used the Tiago for over 10 years, and he had a smooth experience with both the car and the service. That is the reason why he decided to go back to Tata. He really likes the ride quality and handling of the Harrier. He also praises the automatic transmission of the SUV a lot.
Tata launched the petrol version of the Harrier recently. The engine used in the Harrier is the all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged unit that Tata developed in-house. It debuted in the Sierra first, and the engine also made its way to the Safari and the Harrier in a different state of tune. The SUV generates 170 Ps and 280 Nm of torque in the Harrier and Safari. This engine is available with both a 6-speed manual and an automatic transmission.
