World's 1st 5 door Maruti Suzuki Jimny With Portal Axles Is Made-In-Bangalore [Video]
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is hands down one of the most capable off-road SUVs in the country available on sale. Now, what can make the already incredible Jimny even more capable? Well, recently, Lamda Components, one of the most popular manufacturers of off-road special parts, has shared a video in which the world's first Jimny with Lamda portal axles is shown performing some serious off-roading.
The video showing this particular Maruti Suzuki Jimny with Lamda portal axles has been shared on YouTube by Lamda Components on their channel. In this short clip, a white-coloured Maruti Suzuki Jimny fitted with Lamda’s newly launched portal axles has been shown driving in deep trenches inside a jungle. The video also shows this SUV coming out of deep pits in which a stock Jimny would get stuck.
Before talking about the specifications and benefits of the Lamda portal axles, we have to explain what portal axles are to those who may not be aware. Portal axles relocate the axle tube above the wheel centreline, using a gear reduction hub at each wheel. In simple words, unlike suspension lifts, portal axles increase ground clearance without raising the differential housing, which is the lowest and most vulnerable point in off-roading.
They are most commonly seen in military vehicles and hardcore off-road builds. However, there are not a lot of people who opt to add portal axles on the Jimny. Now, Lamda Components has officially launched its portal axles for the Jimny, which raises the ground clearance of this SUV by 4 inches, or 100 mm.
As mentioned above, the Lamda portal axles, unlike traditional lift kits, increase the clearance without altering suspension geometry, spring rates, or shock lengths. Due to this, the vehicle is able to preserve its factory ride comfort, steering characteristics, and articulation while dramatically improving obstacle clearance.
Additionally, the width of this SUV also gets increased by 105 mm. As a result of this increment, the side-slope stability gets improved drastically, and it also reduces the risk of rollovers on steep inclines or uneven terrain. The aggressive stance also enhances the visual appeal of the Jimny and gives it a proper rock crawler look, which is loved by many off-road enthusiasts.
Apart from the above-mentioned features, the Lamda portal axles are customisable. Buyers can choose different gear reduction ratios based on their off-roading style. These include rock crawling, mud bogging, or competitive racing. Also, the lift height can be changed according to preference, which makes the setup suitable for both hardcore builds and expedition-style vehicles.
Portal axles, in addition to the above benefits and features, provide additional gear reduction at the wheel hubs, effectively multiplying torque. This helps in reducing strain on the drivetrain while improving low-speed crawling ability. As for the Jimny, it benefits from better throttle control, smoother climbs, and reduced clutch or gearbox stress during extreme off-road use.
If you are someone who is truly passionate about off-roading and frequently goes on adventure rides, then upgrading to portal axles might be one of the most value-for-money upgrades for your vehicle. However, if you do not actively participate in extreme off-roading, then the stock Jimny is more than capable.
