The number of road accidents has lately been on a steep climb in India. Many of these are caused by overspeeding. High-speed collisions cause major damage to vehicles and often claim lives. The video of a Mahindra XUV 700 that was involved in a high-speed crash in Ranchi, is now going viral. The vehicle took severe damage in the incident, but kept its occupants safe. Together with the Mahindra’s impressive crashworthiness, luck played a key role in saving these lives.
It opens by showing a White XUV 700 stuck on the concrete side barrier of a fly over, with its left rear tyre sticking out. Luckily, it seems to have stopped just in time. If not, the SUV would have fallen off the bridge, likely killing its occupants or inflicting severe injuries. From how the vehicle is seen in the video, it looks like it lost control and crashed into the concrete structure..
Eyewitness statements also back this claim. This crash occurred during the late hours of October 16th, on the Ranchi Ring Road. The vehicle was reportedly being driven at a very high speed.
Eyewitnesses say that the driver lost control when he tried to steer sharply, and ended up crashing into the concrete barrier. This explains why the SUV ended up in an awkward position as seen in the video. Luckily, it did not overshoot and fall off the bridge.

The accident brought traffic on the Ring Road to a standstill for some time. Visuals also show that the front right tyre is bald. This may have resulted in it going out of control. While the exact details are unclear, here’s a possible case.
The XUV700 comes with both petrol and diesel engines. The vehicle in this case had the latter. The 2.2L mHawk diesel engine is heavier than the 2.0L mStallion petrol. When the driver attempted the high-speed manoeuvre, the heavier front end and bald front tyre may have unsettled the SUV, and in another few micro-seconds, made it go completely out of control. It soon ended up on the concrete barrier. This incident thus underlines the importance of proper maintenance and replacements for ensuring safety on the road.
According to preliminary reports, no one was seriously injured in this crash. The swift and effective rescue operations carried out by the residents of the place and passersby are to be thanked here. Overspeeding on the Ranchi Ring Road has now become a common affair. In light of this accident, we may soon see the authorities tightening speed (and safety) enforcement here.

Well, watch the video again. You’ll notice that there is a structure that looks like a foot path, in front of the XUV. It has a concrete barrier separating it from the ring road.
Now, skip towards the final few seconds of the video. You’ll see that the front end of the vehicle crashed into this barrier, and is actually resting on it. More importantly, you’ll notice that no part of this barrier can be seen beyond the vehicle’s tail! In other words, this XUV 700 crashed into the barrier head-on!
Now, connect this with the above theory of the driver’s sudden aggressive steering input leading to the car crashing out. Why would he do that? The driver here, in all possibility, was trying to avoid running into this concrete barrier! He may have seen it last minute, due to poor visibility of the place as the accident happened late at night. He may not have crashed if he was going slower!
