It is winter in North India, and it has started to snow in the mountains. Tourists have already begun planning their trips to enjoy the snowfall and also show off their driving skills on snow. This is one of those times when even an expert driver has to be cautious, as the chances of losing control of the vehicle are quite high on snowy roads. Here we have a video of a Land Rover Defender owned by a YouTuber that got stuck in a frozen river while trying to cross it.
The video has been shared by Bunny Punia and Rattan Dhillon on their X profiles. We see the same car in both videos. The exact location is not mentioned in the posts, but it appears to be somewhere in the mountains.
In the first video, we see a white-coloured Land Rover Defender attempting to cross a river that is essentially frozen. We assume that the driver was either too confident about his capabilities or his vehicle’s capabilities. As the driver tried to cross the river, the moment all four wheels of the SUV were on the ice, it started losing traction.
The SUV began struggling despite being a 4x4. To add to the trouble, the thin layer of ice on the surface cracked, and the front wheels slipped into the river. In this case, the driver was lucky that it was a small stream that wasn’t too deep. If it had been a deep or wide river, it could have easily swallowed the vehicle and the driver with it.
The driver then started trying his best to get the vehicle out. This video is a perfect example showing that even a 4x4 SUV won’t be of any use if you don’t use the right technique. As seen in the video, the SUV remained stuck at the spot for hours, and it was only after it got dark that help arrived in the form of the Indian Army.
They brought their truck, drove through the frozen river, and pulled the Defender out. We can hear the driver saying that they had been stuck at the spot since 2 PM. We really hope that the YouTuber learned his lesson and won’t repeat the mistake of taking such terrain lightly.
The Defender is a capable SUV, but on ice or surfaces like a frozen river, regular tyres don’t offer any grip. For a 4x4 system to work properly, the tyres need some level of traction.
On ice, that traction is almost non-existent. To avoid such situations, it is always a good idea to carry a set of snow chains when travelling to the mountains. These chains provide the necessary traction and can help you get out of tricky situations like this.
Driving on ice is one of the trickiest things to do, as you need to be extremely gentle and careful with both the accelerator and brakes. Even a small mistake can cause your vehicle to lose control, crash into other vehicles, or even fall off a cliff.
