In India, hundreds of accidents happen on our roads every day. Carelessness is the major cause of most accidents, and many individuals lose their lives in such tragic incidents. Often, ambulances and paramedics do not reach the spot on time, which also leads to loss of life. Here we have one such incident from Kerala, where a group of doctors carried out a surgical procedure in the middle of the road to save the life of a biker injured in a road accident.
The incident happened a couple of days ago in Kerala’s Udayamperoor region near Kochi. At around 8:30 PM, a biker was seriously injured in an accident. The injured person was identified as Linu, who hails from Kollam. The scooter ridden by Linu had crashed into another bike coming from the opposite direction.
Linu was seriously injured and was facing difficulty breathing. At this time, Dr. B. Manoop from Kottayam Medical College, Dr. Thomas Peter, and Dr. Didiya were passing through the road. They stopped their vehicle and got out to check on the injured person.

They noticed that Linu was struggling to breathe and was lying on the side of the road. It was dark, and locals had gathered around the spot. The doctors had to think quickly and came up with a solution. They decided to make an incision on the victim’s neck to restore his breathing. However, as they were not prepared for such a situation, they did not have the necessary medical equipment.
With the help of locals, the doctors arranged a blade and inserted a plastic straw into the incision to restore breathing. This procedure is called a tracheostomy. It is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the neck directly into the windpipe to establish an airway. Usually, a tube is inserted to help with breathing. In this case, however, the doctors had no other option but to use a straw. This procedure is generally done to remove secretions or bypass an upper airway obstruction.
The procedure was carried out by Dr. Manoop, who is also an assistant professor in the cardiac department at the medical college, while the other two doctors assisted him. After performing the procedure under extremely challenging conditions, the patient was shifted to a nearby private hospital in an ambulance.
The condition of the biker is now stable. The quick thinking of the doctors who happened to be at the spot became the saving grace for the injured rider. They also helped two other riders who were injured in the same accident.
If the doctors had not performed the procedure on the spot, the chances of Linu surviving the accident would have been very low. Images of all three doctors have been circulating online since then, and social media users have been thanking them for their timely intervention. Another interesting aspect of this incident is that all three doctors did not know each other and were meeting for the first time at the accident site.
