Buying a used car makes a lot of sense in 2026. However, one of the biggest challenges buyers face is the uncertainty around maintenance and concerns about potential failures. To address these, Cars24, a leading used car sales platform, has introduced a ‘lifetime warranty’ on used cars. Claimed to be the world’s first lifetime warranty (LTW) for used cars, it aims to deliver a worry-free ownership experience. That said, it comes with a set of conditions and nuances. This article explains them in detail, so you know exactly what you are signing up for.
Cars24 claims the Lifetime Warranty to be an ‘investment’ in your car’s future. According to the website, it will keep out-of-pocket expenses on mechanical repairs and parts zero and in the long run, guarantee maximum peace of mind.
The company further claims that all repairs covered under the policy will be performed by experts using genuine parts. Clearly, these promises have a widespread appeal. The policy also comes with a set of conditions and nuances.
First of all, it only covers vehicles that are less than 12 years old and have an odometer reading of less than 1.5 lakh kilometres. Now, keep in mind that you are about to buy a used car. Therefore, the age is calculated from the date of purchase/ registration by the first owner. If the vehicle is, say, 8 years old, according to its RC, the warranty coverage will only be for four years (12-8). Likewise, if it already has 1 lakh kilometres on odo, the coverage will apply only to the next 50,000 kilometres.

It is important to keep this logic in mind, since the Lifetime Warranty comes at a fee. For manual cars, you’ll need to pay Rs 7000 and for automatics, Rs 15,000. Interestingly, the platform would also want you to purchase an extended warranty for one year, to be eligible for the lifetime warranty. This alone would cost around Rs 12000. This information was reportedly communicated to EV Electree by a Cars24 representative.
Cars24 website also mentions that to keep a car’s lifetime coverage valid, the owner must undertake all scheduled services and maintenance works. These typically occur every 6000 km or in 6 months. These should be done only at Cars24-certified workshops. These would, obviously, cost money. Additionally, the owner will need to pay an annual renewal fee of Rs 1000 to keep the coverage active.
The site also mentions that the lifetime warranty coverage is non-transferable. If the owner decides to sell the vehicle while it is still covered, the buyer will not benefit from it.

The Lifetime Warranty Plan covers every vehicle’s core powertrain components. Mechanical failures and powertrain-related issues are major pain points on used cars. Key components of the engine like cylinder head and block, crankshaft, camshaft, valves, pistons, rings, oil pump, water pump, and vacuum pump are protected. Seals are excluded.
Likewise, the transmission units (both manual and automatic) are also covered. Additionally, parts like propeller shaft, universal joints, and front/rear differentials are also covered under the plan.
The policy doesn’t cover consumables like brake pads, clutch plates, tyres, belts, and filters. External bodywork, painting and damage to glass sections are also excluded. Also, no coverage for damage from fire, floods or accidents. Electrical components that are not related to the powertrain, are also excluded. The LTW is only available to private buyers and not to fleet buyers.
